"Can you explain this?"
From Southern California, the gateway stopover option would be LAX. From LAX, AA flies nonstop to LHR; IB to MAD; TN to CDG; LAN to LIM; and AB (seasonally) to DUS and TXL.
You could certainly do Hawaii-LAX (stopover) - LHR on AA (and even connect in LON to another European destination on BA, IB, MA, AY, or AB) for 20,000 miles. Your ability to stopover at LAX and then continue on with a partner carrier would depend on whether the particular partner carrier publishes a through-fare from your Hawaiian city to your foreign destination, and permits a routing via LAX.
You can book a stopover on an all-AA metal international award by using the multi-city option on the award-booking engine at aa.com. If continuing from LAX on a partner carrier, you would have to call AA to book the award.
Obviously I am a bit thick...so let me understand what you are saying clearly.
I can book a return Hawaii - LAX (with extended stopover) - LHR for about 20K more in miles?
So how long can I "stay" in the stopover city..being LAX (being where I live)?
I do have a Europe trip to do next year as well and this would certainly help.
But, can I do..
Feb 18th fly back from HI to LAX. Stay in LAX till...say Sep 2012 and then fly to LHR??
Interesting stuff!
Assuming you can find MileSAAver award seats, then:
for 17.5K miles, you can fly LAX to Hawaii per person in February;
for 20K miles, you can fly Hawaii to LAX in February, have a lengthy stopover, and then continue on to Europe in September,
provided that you fly on a nonstop from LAX to Europe, and your over-water carrier to Europe has a published fare from your Hawaiian departure city to your European arrival city (and that fare allows your particular routing).
You have one year from the date of award-ticket issuance to complete all travel on an award.
So for only 2,500 more miles than the cost of a Hawaii-LAX award, you can have a Hawaii-LAX-Europe award.
