Any advice for my situation (besides the obvious avoiding Delta advice) would be greatly appreciated... I'm perplexed.
Long sell is DL sending a manual request to partner airline for availability, then someone there has to manually respond to it and confirm it, before it is confirmed and may be ticketed. May take a few minutes to a few days for the response back. In the meanwhile you keep calling back to see when it is confirmed.
But, all that is a moot point.
You can NOT redeem DL SlyMiles for the following HA flights:
* anything US mainland - Hawaii
* HNL-HND (Haneda, Tokyo)
* HNL-KIX (Osaka)
* HNL-FUK (Fukuoka)
* HNL-ICN (Incheon)
(because DL has all of these, i.e. Hawaii - US Mainland, and HNL to NRT (not HND though, but close enough I guess to disallow it), HNL to KIX, HNL to FUK, and HNL to ICN via SkyTeam Korean Air 2x daily, and if DL has a flight on its route, or another SkyTeam airline, then HA not valid for it)
You can redeem DL SM for other HA flights, such as:
* Hawaii inter-island
* HNL-MNL (Manila)
* HNL-PPT (Papeete, Tahiti)
* HNL-PPG (Pago Pago, Samoa)
* HNL-SYD (Sydney)
Here if you are trying to redeem it for HA flight LAS-OGG, you can not. You can only do it if you get LAS-LAX/SLC-HNL on DL and then HNL-OGG on HA. If you want the direct flight, you have to use your HawaiianMiles if you have 'em, or else pony up cash for a revenue HA ticket.
And remember, accruing SlyMiles is the same: can only do it on the same flights as can redeem on, can not do it on the others.
