I am not sure why Baltimore is so dismissed on this thread, but there is a lot to do there, and the food options are excellent (a very thriving immigrant population makes it really interesting). I personally love hanging out there--it's a very cool city, much more down-to-earth than most of DC, and interestingly architecturally and culturally. It certainly has its gritty side but there is a lot more to it than that.
The halfway point is Wilmington, more or less my home base. Winterthur is an excellent option, as is Longwood Gardens, about 30 minutes off I-95 in Kennett Square, PA. Both are nationally renowned, and rightfully so, in their respective spheres.
I don't mind Baltimore, but to some extent, my preference would be to see some of the smaller town options, rather than going from one big city to another, on the way to another big city.
