Since the airline is responsible for ensuring their passengers have the relevant travel documentations before allowing them to board, I would be very surprised if they don't check & validate your printed boarding pass.
I've only checked in online twice. Air Canada and Air Transat. And no I didn't have to be looked at. I just went straight in. They check it at the gate before boarding though..
