It's not really a long drive which requires an overnight stay. Annapolis is out of the way but if you're looking for an overnight diversion not on 95 South, Annapolis is an option. It's a pretty and quaint walking town on the Severn. It's better than Baltimore overnight although I do give high praise to the Walters. But that's just for a few hours.

You could take that extra time and use it in the DC area. Explore Old Alexandria across the Potomac and/or drive to Mount Vernon and get a tour of George Washington's home.
