Having a note about other PNR(s) in your PNR [or having them linked in some way, not sure how it is actually done] is nice in the event of flight cancellations/weather/etc.

I call the airline, explain the situation and make my request. Most recently for a trip that ended up being planned convolutedly and we had five PNRs.
