On the latter question, you should be able to call and book it. CI will have a flight to BKK with a short layover in Tapei.

Fly out of LAX else the metal will truly suck. I don't know what they are flying on the TPE<>BKK leg, but you probably do not care much about 3-1/2 hours after the TPAC leg.

One advantage is the schedule. You arrive in BKK around 11AM and depart around 4PM , a lot better than the routes through N Asia as far as I am concerned.
