Thanks for the idea, I definitely see what you mean. I'm sure for most people here that would be a much, much better option. For me personally, there are a few factors that make the miles less valuable:
- I know I am not going to be doing much un-reimbursed international travel other than this trip in the next several years.
- I'm not going to be earning any more BA miles.
- I probably wouldn't spend the extra money / miles for business class even if I had them.
- When we travel, we often have no flexibility whatsoever, as my wife gets assigned rigid vacation blocks, so we just have to buy the best tickets we can.
- I can't seem to find any partner availability at any time for the places I often go domestically -- BGR, BHB and OGG.
- BA miles are being devalued for certain trips? Not sure if that affects me too much.
So although it would only save me $300 or so, if I could get 2 or 3 stopovers out of it, that might be worth 90k BA miles to me. If I could get the stopovers anyway on a cash booking, then I would definitely save the miles and spend the cash.
