Well, sorry to frustrate others: My upgrade percentage is 100 percent outside the US. And 90% are pre-upgrades. However: Generally I do not book the cheapest room. This gives (a) the hotel an incentive to put me on top of the list and secures (b) me to end up in a room I do not like and might (c) open the door to even better upgrades.
