In the past, such changes have been related to aircraft maintenance requirements. AC usually flies the 77L YYZ-PVG, and as there are only 6 of them, with 4 usually required for HKG and SYD, there comes a time when changes are required and no substitute is available. This happened to me last March - flight to PVG suddenly disappeared from the schedule.
