Pretty hit and miss from my experience. Have just done a trip from NZ to Europe and back via LAX & LHR.

In LAX I was asked to remove the iPad. In LHR and AMS, I left it in my bag and was not challenged.

In NZ and Australia, I leave it in my bag and never been challenged yet.
