I find that when I ask, the answer is invariably, "yes, everything needs to come out." Of course, if I don't ask, it just goes through.

So, to echo a previous poster, I leave it in but accessible should I need to pull it out. I did have my bag run through twice on Sunday - i don't know if it's because of the iPad or if I just had too much stuff jumbled up inside the bag
