I was sorry to hear about your problems with LAN. In my experience, their service on the ground is really awful, while their product in the air is very good. In any case, I ALWAYS fly LAN booking through AA either in D (around the world business) or U (award business), never in J (full fare business) and have never had any very serious problems. It is true that the AA link to LAN is sometimes down, but I just wait a while and call back. I have been able to get award bookings for friends in economy on LAN through BA without great problems. Of course, these fare classes are subject to availability, but I nearly always manage to find the date I want, or close to it. The one big exception for me is IPC-PPT since the number of flights was reduced to just one a week.
