I have a similar itinerary next month. How is immigration handled at FRA? I understand the signage reads: International connections" and "domestic connections". Italy is international, but also Schengen. Which immigration area did you use?

It is for entry into the Schengen area.
We got off the plane and followed the sign for "connecting flights." Before we got to immigration, we looked at a monitor and noted that our flight to Florence would leave from an "A" gate (no number specified, just A), so we followed the signs for "A." Immigration took about two minutes (it was 6 am) and then security took about five minutes. That's pretty much my approach at Frankfurt--get off the plane and find a monitor ASAP to determine where I'm going, and then follow the signs accordingly. Hope that helps.
