How are you getting ripped off? You chose your routing; in this case to fly AC to IAH, and then another airline to MSY (via AC codeshare). Why did you not choose the same flights as your colleague?

As I stated earlier sometimes the rules work to ones advantage, sometimes they work against you. In this case they worked in a way that you perceived was against you; that doesn't mean that they are silly or that you are getting ripped off.

FWIW, I'm a person who has benefited from the way these upgrades are calculated, as FT has taught me how to work the system. If upgrades were calculated on origin and destination no matter what the airline or class of service actually flown I'd have had far fewer upgrades this year.
