I know I get that with the Chase BA, but that is the program I use the least.
The value I feel I get from the Starwood gold that comes with the Plat. is that I have actually received room upgrades for every Starwood stay. It seemed to me that when I use cash and points (8000 pts and $150/night) at the Luxury Collection and then am upgraded to what is usually at least a concierge type level, that I have recouped my yearly fee for Platinum, but maybe I'm wrong.
Not wrong, but not necessarily right. My experiences parallel yours, but I have seen enough from other posters here to understand that my very limited SPG Gold experience does not track what many others have seen. If it works for you, however, then, the experience of others doesn't matter; just keep in mind that you might not always get the sweet SPG upgrades. I agree no ForEx fees make the Plat a card that I'll keep, but I've had the card for around 20 years, many years before the current promos have changed the nature of the card. If I had gotten my card in the last 24 months, I would probably have been more likely to scarf the points off the initial offer and then cancel the card.
