Welcome to FT! You will enjoy this board tremendously.

I have taken 889 about a dozen times in the last 4 years. The answer to your question depends on a few things, like what class of service you will be in.

Personally, I stay awake for the JFK - YVR leg although I occassionally doze off. I enjoy the food and the IFE. After departing YVR I eat something light and fall asleep if the spirit moves me. Its about a 13 hour leg. If I can get a total of 6 or 7 hours of sleep on this leg I consider it a victory.

You get into HKG at about 6 or so and I guess into PEK sometime in the afternoon. Resist the urge to sleep and hit the sack at about 10pm local.

If you are in FC on 889 it will be easy to sleep. Sleep when you feel like it and don't force yourself to sleep when you don't feel like it.

Enjoy the food, the service, the IFE and if you see Wendy tell her I said "hi".
