You said you select middle seats when your connection time is less than 3 hours. That, in my opinion, is a very long time for a connection (unless you're on an international arriving connection). If you're connecting domestically, I don't see how saving five or so minutes by sitting so far up front in a middle would matter when compared with a three hour connection.
