I admit this news is disappointing, but hardly surprising. The Australia-US route is a cosy duopoly between QF and UA (since NZ pulled out from direct flights on this route). The Australia-Europe market, however, is a fiercely competitive route. So it really wouldn't be a fair swap.
But I'm sure many of us would love CX to compete on this route.
