Agree about it being a dumb contract to sign. But to absolve the unions of responsibility is laughable. While I certainly don't know when this particular clause was signed but many such contracts are signed under the threat of a strike. Personally, I think NW's former approach of brinksmanship and allowing strikes is probably the better course of action. But airlines should never be in the position to have to make that choice.
