In my experience, you don't even need to cancel - just change/modify the reservation. You can pick new cities and dates and it will tell you if saver awards are available. I've booked early and then changed flights as better options open up later on - so there is no risk. No change fees unless there's a tax impact, which would only be $5 or so.
