Thanks for the feedback everyone, and for your condolences. In the end, there was no availability with AC (on the web at least, for the return flight - no flexibillity on dates on my end), and after being on hold for 45+ mins with AC just in case they could free up some space, I had to book WS before risking not getting a flight at all.
