Exactly my thoughts. And it's highly unlikely that the cabin will have all seats booked already, either by status pax (and it's not a busy route for status pax) or by those paying.
To the OP you can't assign seats ahead of time except if you are 1) a status passenger, or 2) pay for them.
Check in 24 hours prior to departure and get the best seats that are available at that time.
