American Airlines likes to use the letter A a lot in it's marketing. American Advantage, Admirals Club, American Airlines, etc. Even a kettle deplaning his first AA flight would recognize this.

Delta has a FFP called Sky. Delta calls its club Sky.

That these associations were too subtle for the two of you is evidence that United was correct to give the clubs an explicitly eponymous name.
