I'm certain it's a typo by the earlier poster. The printed statement always says 12/31.

I never looked at my statement that carefully before, but I just did and mine clearly states "To qualify for Starwood Gold Preferred Guest Status, you need to have $30,000 in qualified spend by December 31st" (not December 1st per the poster above).
