Actually, thinking about this a little more, I'd do Chicago as the end of the HI trip and reverse things with the inbound from Europe, gateway stopover and outbound to HNL all utilizing DFW (should still be within 20k) for one important reason: I consider BA to be worth the fuel surcharges for travel on a 744, not a 777.
ATL-LHR (which you should absolutely take for convenience) will be a 777 and I think ORD is currently all-777. DFW, on the other hand, sees at least one 744 per day. If you can't get that flight then I don't think I'd pay extra for BA; an extra trip to CCR (you can use it when connecting from ATL if your flight is ex-T5 and make sure to get a cabana for the shower!) isn't worth the surcharges when it's 777 vs 777 in my opinion.
