It will help though, as will an idea of his nationality and marital/family status. You might have a high salary, but the amount you are preapred to spend on rent may not be realistic for London. South West London is popular with expats, and prices rise as you get further out from the centre. Basically, Kensington, Chelsea and South Kensington are very desirable places to live, and popular with expats, but are very expensive. A two bedroom flat may be affordable, depending on your salary, but a house is very expensive (£4m-£15m+) and rents are proportionate. Families tend to move from those areas to Notting Hill, Fulham, Wandsworth and Battersea for bigger houses, parks and good schools, and they are popular with US and European expats, and are cheaper, but they are still very expensive. These areas are also popular with single sharers. A family house will be about £40K to £70K pa rent in Fulham for example. Flats will be cheaper, particularly if the rent is shared. Clapham and Balham will be slightly cheaper. All these places have a mix of families and younger single people and flat-sharers and good access to the City. Clapham is popular with younger sharers, and has good restaurants, bars and parks. Marylebone is fashionable and very central. The City has residential accommodation but is probably not particularly fun. East London is cheaper and scruffier but might fit your budget better, it depends on what you have got to spend. Parts of it are very popular, but more urban and edgy. And of course as it gets more popular, rents will rise. As Raffles says, unless you have a family, or are looking to share, a second bedroom will be an expensive luxury. See foxtons.com to get an idea of rental prices (although don't rent through them).
