OK, I was holding off on redeeming as the SWUs expire a year after issuing, but I'm gonna need them soon - nope, it doesn't work:
The companion you have selected for your 2012 Diamond Choice Benefit is not eligible for this gift either because they are already the tier level you are gifting or a problem exists with their account. Please validate the account information with the companion, select a different companion or select a different benefit option.

Seriously, what the @%#! is wrong with Delta's IT?
