They need to earn it on their own. Gifting GM status (like I did to my wife) doesn't put their MQMs at 50,000. It only offers the benefits of GM status. She has about 16,000 MQMs so far this year, so unless I gift her FO status (I just hit PM a few weeks ago) or requaulify as DM, she'll be back to a regular SM member as of March 1st.
