To avoid getting bumped, yes, I would checkin early and if they try to bump you, mention that other family members are also on the flight.

Number_6, now that's food for thought, an A330! I'll guess that was SQ15 (SFO-ICN) instead of SQ1 (SFO-HKG)? Did it have Spacebeds in the biz-cabin?
