I'm assuming that you have no status with AS just yet?
You could just buy a ticket for a friend or family mbr. Some folks have also bought a ticket and than decide to not use the itinerary. This, I think, than shoots back into your wallet with the one year renewed. I don't know if this is considered to be acceptable by the powers that be @ AS but I have read other reports on this board of such activity....
If you are Gold status here this can be useful as there are no changes fees at that status level....
