The "no gate" excuse is either entirely bogus or a product of one-dimensional thinking.
As so eloquently stated by NW's CEO after the Detroit snow debacle a while back "Don't tell me we need a jetway to unload a plane, 50,000 people a day all over the world prove you wrong. Get a set of stairs."
At one time we always boarded or unloaded on stairs. As long as there is a parking are a plane can be unloaded. If it's remote from a terminal, that's what busses are for.
That NWA after-action memo and directive was a classic for a corporation taking responsibility and refusing to allow people to shift blame for a problem. I wish I still had it.
