Hong Kong flight attendant confirmed with SARS

HONG KONG, April 19 (Reuters) - Hong Kong said on Saturday a male flight attendant with Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd had been confirmed with SARS, the first infected cabin crew member in the former British colony.

A spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) today (April 19) called on passengers who had traveled from Singapore to Hong Kong on flight CX 714 (Cathay Pacific) on April 15 to call DH's hotline 187 2222 for health advice.

The plea follows the detection of a confirmed case of severe acute respiratory syndrome involving a male cabin crew member.

Investigation revealed that the crew member had been feeling unwell since April 15, and was admitted to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital on April 17. He is in stable condition.

DH has informed the Airport Authority and the airline concerned. Advice was given to the airline concerned to disinfect the airplane.

DH is tracing the other crew members and passengers who had taken the flight for surveillance purpose.

The spokesman reminded members of the public who have respiratory symptoms including fever, chills, malaise and cough to avoid traveling by plane before recovery.
