Not entirely true. If you have a paid SC membership, you don't have to be flying DL for access, you could just as well be flying Southwest. Though it's not my home base, I fly a lot out of BNA. It's heavily Southwest. The same challenges you describe getting out of DTW with connections, I have to endure to get to BNA. At the end of the day, we all make the sacrifices we feel are worthwhile for the benefits that we feel important.
Out of DTW (which is where all my outbound flights originating), you would have to be flying DL to access the SC. Only Delta (and a couple skyteam flights like KLM and airfrance) fly out of the terminal the SC's are at. All the other airlines fly out of another building over a mile away.
Out of BNA it isn't an issue since it's one common security area if you are on WN and want to use the SC there. At MSY I am not sure if TSA would let you in the D concourse for the SC or not if you are on Southwest, they have allowed me in before when my flight was out of Gate C, but I was on Delta in those cases.
