I can just see the marketing copy: Direct flights from Minneapolis to Detroit! (with a stop in Chicago)

Seriously, the point of direct flights is not to save on flight numbers but to provide a marketing gimmick that confuses consumers. They see a single flight entry "Ooh, DL40 all the way from Seattle to London!" and think it's superior to UA998 SEA-ORD and UA938 ORD-LHR until they've already purchased it and discover that they have to stop and change planes in MSP.
