Golds can have this too, if row 1 is taken and the rest is full. You get that "unfortunately seat selection is not currently available" message (no map shown), then usually the next morning you can select a seat since they've pushed the curtain back (or whatever it takes). ExpertFlyer / KVS gives you a clue as to what is going on.
