I phoned CX once the reservation was made and said I wanted to try and change flights. They said there is availability and AA should be able to see it. I then phoned AA and repeated the message, and they put a request to CX to free up inventory for AA on the flights I wanted.
It worked last time around (about 12 months ago) and I should find out later in the week if it works this time.
The most frustrating thing is that only your "home" airline lets you waitlist for awards in OW. That means constantly phoning up and checking if there is availability, rather than having a computer do it all automatically. Aside from unhappy customers, this has to be more work and therefore more cost, for the airlines.
