When I want to standby I also do it with the gate agent. I have never called reservations to do this and don't remember the last time I asked an AA TA for this. The only time I have called reservations for something similar it was for the confirmed $50 change. I find it odd that a supervisor wouldn't know about free standby. I would also expect the TA to know. Was this at first or business class checkin?
FWIW, there is no PLAT desk. The PLAT number rings regular agents, but you get queue priority
EDIT: One question. Were you checking baggage? Checked baggage might be an issue with standby. Also, it was indicated you took a BP for your original flight. Did you then go to the gate of the earlier flight to request standby?
