I think the problem that is getting "worser" is the legal/liability implications of such a situation. The tendency in travel, medicine, and other situations is rather than deal with a situation that has risks, to just avoid it. This is due to the high cost of an unlikely negative situation.

I'm not defending what happened (I don't see the issue as long as the passengers understood the basic emergency procedures), but if the plane caught fire and not everyone escaped, this discussion would be very different in tone. It's really easy to judge a quick decision after the fact.
