Ticket counter agents are supposed to push the CFC option because it brings in more revenue. However, if you are an elite and/or traveling on an eligible fare, you should be able to stand by at no cost. Most pax would never know the difference and just want to get to their destination sooner, even with a $50 fee.

I would not have waited 15 minutes with the first agent. I would have proceeded directly to one of the AAngels at the ACs (or Premium Lounge if eligible) for assistance. Even a kiosk would work to get on the standby list. Gate agents might be willing to help as a last resort, and frankly I have found them less aggressive about CFC than ticket counter agents at large stations and hubs.

I'm not trying to excuse the actions of the agents you encountered. But, as a PLT, you should be aware that there are other ways of helping yourself that could have alleviated some of your frustration.
