It depends upon the airline; some enforce the check-in cutoff time, particularly if the flight is oversold, so be aware of what risk you are taking. A few airlines insist on documents being checked (and BP stamped accordingly) at the point of origin (EWR in the OPs case) and will deny boarding if you just show up at the gate with OLCI. Again it varies by airline (which wasn't stated by the OP).
