I'm not sure about the CX recommendation. Yes, the intl CX product is better than AC transcon but are you planning to buy a F or C ticket or go Y? If it's Y, the Y bother (and put up with the US hassle?)

I'd be flying WT+ and hoping for an MFU, but there is no way I'd do two legs instead of one just for the miles **when US immigration and JFK are involved**. Much as it grates to fly and not earn miles, avoiding those two horrors must be worth it.
I"ll check out pricing and see what looks best but I think multi city and AC or Westjet for a single YVR-YYZ looks favourite from what you say.
