How codeshares work. Not in real time. But rather AA has bought some seats from CX. Some airlines 'keep' these seats right up till departure. Whereas situations like this, AA might release unsold seats to CX maybe 100-72 hours prior to departure.

Bear in mind that say, the opposite holds true when AA is sold out and CX is available. AA cannot simply call up CX to release one seat as AA might have already had a set agreement as to how many seats it wishes to purchase for each flight.

CX must still how seats on 'backorder' and will probably need their own passengers to waitlist for a flight first, and then let inventory control slowly release seats as per status.

Note AA has no "A" seats for RTW First Class though it holds "D" seats. AA would prefer you to book them instead of CX. Because like some codeshares, AA will end up paying for seats it has not sold even if the flight is full on CX's side.

PS - please excuse my grammatical errors today. Head cold - can't think properly! <sniff>
