sure- and I'd be getting off at the first or second stop anyhow and taking NJ Transit or Metro-North back to NYC so I don't see that there would be any adverse effects.
The potential adverse effects are that the crew will say that your Regional ticket is not valid on their train, and then require you to purchase a full-fare ticket to a destination to which that train actually transports passengers. If you refuse to pay, you might find yourself put off at the next station and having to explain to the police who meet the train why you should not be charged with theft of services.

I don't know how likely that scenario is, but it is certainly a possibility.
