Tawaraya makes beautiful boxed lunches to carry and eat later. The theme of the lunch changes every month. If you are taking a train back to Tokyo after staying at Tawaraya, they are a lot nicer than what you can get on the train.
+1, this is an excellent idea if you will be taking a train back to Tokyo during a meal time.
I agree that you should be fine calling the hotel directly as they have english speaking staff, but should you need any help in communicating with a Ryokan the concierge at the Peninsula can make a reservation for you, or contact the hotel to coordinate arrival details, etc...
