I have a strange question. I'm checking into the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan on Thursday and am staying until Sunday. I'm Diamond at Hilton and am going to have the opportunity to check in early. I would not think more about time of day but rather occupancy. However, if a hotel is sold out or has a high occupancy date, I would recommend coming in at check in time to ensure an upgrade. Coming in early (prior to 12) would not be recommended if looking for an upgrade since, as you noted already, all available rooms may not be cleaned. Also, if your myway preferences are for an upgrade, chances are you will be if available at check-in. Calling in advance to inform the hotel of your early arrival may be helpful.
