The issue I have had with using a debit card is that a few hotel chains and rental car chains did not or do not take them. You must have a credit card, no debit. Others charge a huge initial pending charge ($200 or $400) and then they hold these charges for days, sometimes a week before they release them.
I've had no issues with my Chase Visa when traveling everywhere. I have had issues with my MasterCard from HBSC. I don't do Amex any longer, but never had an issue with that when I used it.
