That's why CX excels where SQ fails.
I'd rather have a meal of my choice and that's why I choose a carrier over this. If you've paid for First, you wouldn't expect the "Sorry, ran out of your choice, sir" reply.
There are other ways in which CX can save costs. But food should not be one of them. I'm sure the cabin crew will be very happy to reap the leftovers.
If CX wants to save $$, they can start by doing proper yield management and control the number of upgrades wantonly given up.
