I would hazard a guess that most people who are 1K / GS are not flying with companions most of the time, enough to make decreased E+ availability due to companions a big problem.

First of all, it's mostly business travelers flying alone. Secondly, for companions to become a dominant problem, they would have to be flying as much as the 1K/GS -- and at that point they too would be!
