The other use that I usually end up getting out of them is last minute awards (yes, even with the 72 hour rule) as DL still has no fees and good availability if you are willing to spend more miles. Even at medium/medium or medium/high, 40-50k for a domestic rt is still better than the $1200 for a paid ticket imo.
